While the Iceland eruption garners headlines, it's still worth mentioning that the eruption in Hawaii -- which just keeps going and going and going and going -- can still be a local problem, too. After taking care of all the dwellings (except maybe for one?) in the Royal Gardens subdivision, the flows are now edging toward Kalapana. A couple of years ago they covered the two most notable black-sand beaches at Kalapana -- there are still many people living in this section of the island.
Last week the lava flows got back to the ocean, and this week they repaved a road, which generates unpleasantness while it's happening (see the video in this link to the news article):
