Lighthouse of the Week, August 3-9, 2014: South Bass Island, Lake Erie
With Lake Erie in the news in the past week due to a toxin from hazardous algae getting into municipal water supplies from the lake, I thought I would look for a good Lake Erie lighthouse.
This turned out to be harder than I thought. Lake Erie has quite a few lighthouses, but several of them are replicas or tourist attractions or both. I ended up choosing South Bass Island lighthouses, which is on the Register of National Historic Places, and though the historical light and attached residence are retired, there's still a working lighthouse tower there.
And I added in a picture of the original lighthouse's Fresnel lens.
