I found this lighthouse searching on "beautiful lighthouse", and then found a video that might provide several lighthouses for future weeks. This one stood out because it was tall, white, and had palm trees.
Now, in this region, one of the most famous islands is the one that blew up big time in 1883 -- which brings up an interesting question I can't answer. That island is Krakatoa, between Sumatra and Java, of course. Well, this lighthouse is on an island near a bigger island, a bit north of the Sunda Strait and Jakarta. That puts it here (zoom in for a better view of where it is near the little island it is situated on).
The Lighthouse Directory doesn't have a lot to say about this one. But the question I can't answer is the year that leads it off, which is the year when the lighthouse was established. The year is 1883.
How did they manage to establish the lighthouse in the same year that Krakatoa exploded right in its archipelagic neighborhood?
I truly don't know. Here's what we do know (it is tall):
"1883. Active; focal plane 61 m (200 ft); white flash every 7.5 s. 57 m (187 ft) 16-sided cast iron tower, painted white with lantern and gallery. Several coast guard station buildings. ... This lighthouse is just off the northwestern point of Belitung, facing the entrance to the Gelasa Strait. It was prefabricated by Enthoven at The Hague."
I now present five pictures of the beautiful lighthouse.
