The Daily Mail had an article that featured a field trip I'd like to make - to the lava lake of Nyiragongo in Africa. Not that I have any real plans to do so. I'll still be lucky to get to Iceland (which might have an subglacial eruption brewing, according to the seismometers).
But the article is about a guy and his girlfriend that did make the trip, and did see the lake. And they took some good pictures. It's pretty impressive. The article reminds us that a couple of times (1977 and 2002) the lake level got really high, and the pressure broke the side of the mountain, causing the liquid lava to drain out the mountain at high speed, catching up to hapless slower elephants and
coming right down the main street of Goma.
Fortunately, as is normally the case, the lava lake is currently stable.
