Over on the Pacific Coast of the United States, something weird is happening. Hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions, even billions) of little purple jellyfish-type organisms with gas bubble sails have been washing up on the beaches. The picture from La Push, Washington verges on the incredible.
The question is: WHY? Well, the winds pushing in the right direction are obviously a primary reason, but why so many of these things all at once in the same place?
The Daily Mail doesn't get into the science much, except for the counting aspect:
No room for a beach towel! BILLIONS of mysterious jelly-fish-like creatures wash up on beaches along the west coast of the U.S.
The HuffingtonPost talks to a couple more scientists, and apparently it IS just the waves and wind:
Thousands Of Blue Sea Creatures Called Velella Velellas Wash Ashore In California
Should we be worried? Well, when you get a sense of how big they are -- not really.
